Rat #4: biology basics, what’s in rat poison and UW-Madison

The Black rat is also known as the roof rat or climbing rat, and is about eight inches in length. The Norway rat is more commonly called the Brown, wharf or sewer rat, about 10 inches long. Rats teeth grow continually, and need to literally gnaw on hard things to wear them down. Their constant need to gnaw means that they are incredibly destructive and voracious. Rats will eat absolutely anything and chew through anything to get at it. You’d think that with this eating habit, they’d be able to throw up something that was making them sick. But no, rats can’t regurgitate nor can they burp and don’t experience heartburn. So, if you can coax them to eat something poisonous, they’re doomed. Of course, they’ve evolved to work around their digestive inadequacies.

Rats are very smart. If they eat something and get sick, they’ll avoid that item. Therefore, poisons that require a large dose to kill but don’t kill the animal, because it only ate a small dose, cause bait shyness. Therefore, a poison bait that kills over time and ingested in small quantities is preferred because it does not cause bait shyness. Enter UW-Madison! You can read the entire history here, in sum, researchers at UW-Madison, with funding from Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation (WARF) isolated the chemical compound that thins blood.

It’s used today to help people prone to heart and other blood-related issues. WARF got to name it, this drug is commonly known as Warfarin, and medically known as Cumadin. When taken in large enough quantities over time, it will cause internal bleeding and it’s why rats haven’t taken over the entire planet.

Warfarin is both odorless and tasteless, and is effective when mixed with food bait, because the rodents will return to the bait and continue to feed over a period of days until a lethal dose is accumulated. It may also be mixed with talc which accumulates on the animal's skin and fur, and is subsequently consumed during grooming. Apparently rats spend nearly as much time grooming themselves as they do destroying things.

The use of Warfarin itself as a rat poison is now declining, because many rat populations have developed resistance to it, thank you Darwin, and poisons of considerably greater potency are now available. A major downside is that such rodenticides may also accumulate in birds of prey and other animals that eat the poisoned rodents or baits. 

Newer poisons are effective against animals that have developed a resistance to blood-thinning Warfarin. Bromethalin is a rodenticide which poisons the central nervous system, causing paralysis, convulsions, and death. As with any poison, it’s important (even if gross) for homeowners to remove and trash or bury dead rat carcasses so birds of prey or other animals don’t consume them and get sick or die.

Mid July is just the right time to harvest garlic. When Jay and I were digging this year's harvest, we were talking about how to know when is the right time to harvest. He knew that I looked for three brown leaves, but he didn't realize that I was looking at the leaves at the base of the plant, he had always assumed we were looking for three leaves with brown tips. To help explain this, we made a short video in the garden.

Rats 3: Part of the English language

Rats are frequently blamed for damaging food supplies and other goods, or spreading disease. Their reputation has carried into common parlance: in the English language, "rat" is often an insult or is generally used to signify an unscrupulous character; it is also used to mean an individual who works as a police informant. It is a term (noun and verb) in criminal slang for an informant - "to rat on someone" is to betray them by informing the authorities of a crime or misdeed they committed. Describing a person as "rat-like" usually implies he or she is unattractive and suspicious.

They're typically associated with filth, bad smell, and have be blamed for transmitting diseases. This gave rise to a number of expressions, including “to smell a rat” and the associated meaning of rat (“a person regarded as despicable”).

Similar to the wonderful variety of appearances of chicken figures of speech in the English language, here is a collection of rat figures of speech from weblearneng.com

5. to smell a rat = to guess that something wrong is happening or to suspect some hidden danger or disadvantage.

Rats!

Rats. They've practically evolved alongside humans, and certainly have occupied the same spaces throughout human history. The Black Plague is long gone, but when they take up residence in the chicken coop, they've got to go. This kicks off an 8-part series exploring rats, their place in human history and language, behavior, biology, the damage they do and finally our local rat problem and our efforts to get rid of them.

We built our chicken coop and run with keeping predators out as a priority. We started with a foundation of cement blocks sunk into the ground, and then built a solid wood structure starting with beefy 2x6 treated lumber. Upon that foundation we built the rest of the structure so that we could “sandwich” hardware cloth between the uprights and batons to keep anything from prying the wire back to enter the run.  We were generous with our screws and staples so it was all very secure. The doors are locked with raccoon-proof carabiners each night. Our coop was secure against hawks, ferrets, weasels, possums, coyotes, dogs, skunks, raccoons and anything else that wanted chicken for dinner.

So sometime in March when I discovered some holes in the chicken coop “run,” that’s the screened in porch that our chickens spend most of their time when not sleeping or laying eggs, my first thought was that the chickens were digging holes out of winter boredom.

A few weeks later I discovered some light excavation between the foundation of our house and the coop (there is a 2-3 inch space between them) and about that time our neighbor and chicken co-parent/owner Matt told us that he had seen two rats helping themselves to chicken feed one evening. After seeing new holes and excavations in our compost bin, I wasn’t particularly surprised, but I was unexpectedly overcome with a sudden urge to kill any and all rats within a 10-mile radius of our coop.

I baited some rat traps (I keep them on hand for occasional chipmunk raids on my tomato beds) and almost immediately caught one. However, no matter the bait I used or the location I put the traps, I couldn’t catch the second one that Matt was sure he had seen feeding in the run.

I either (or simultaneously) gave up, forgot about or denied that “it” was still there and the spring moved on into summer. And then I was reminded of them.

Rats 2, Rats and human co-evolution

Before I continue with my rat tale, I thought it would be useful to explore and explain why I feel justified to exterminate every last rat using any means possible, period. Even though they're said to ve responsible for the death of 75,000,000 (yes, million) people, I wonder if this isn't the response or reaction that a perfectly rational person should have to a simple, four-legged creature that is stealing a bit of chicken food each day.

It didn’t take much work to find negative connotations of genus Rattus, the most important of which to humans are the black rat, Rattus rattus, and the brown rat, Rattus norvegicus. Here’s the first sentence in the “European cultures” section of the rat entry in Wikipedia.

“European associations with the rat are generally negative. For instance, "Rats!" is used as a substitute for various vulgar interjections in the English language. These associations do not draw, per se, from any biological or behavioral trait of the rat, but possibly from the association of rats (and fleas) with the 14th-century medieval plague called the Black Death. Rats are seen as vicious, unclean, parasitic animals that steal food and spread disease.”

Here’s an alternate perspective from the New World Encyclopedia. “Due to an incredible adaptability to almost any environment and a general ability to live symbiotically with humans, rats are regarded to be the most successful mammalian species living on earth today, followed by the mouse.”

And this from Cracked.com. “To be fair, a part of this monstrous reputation is firmly rooted in reality. Besides costing us billions of dollars a year in property damage, rats are one of the most widespread ecological pests in the world, feasting on defenseless native wildlife wherever they've been introduced and even driving other species to the brink of extinction.”

On the other hand, while you certainly shouldn't pull one out of a storm drain and put it in your mouth, there isn't any scientific basis to assume that rats are exceptionally disease-prone animals. This stereotype primarily stems from the infamous Black Death, an outbreak of bubonic plague speculated to have killed over 75,000,000 people during the mid-1300s. But it was actually transmitted by the fleas of warm-blooded mammals in general. Rats appeared responsible for the plague only because they were so common.

Now obviously bubonic plague isn't a problem these days, and you'll be hard pressed to find a rat-spread disease that is. According to the Center for Disease Control, rats don't even spread rabies. That's right, despite their absolutely staggering numbers, rats are one of the animals you're least likely to get sick from.
However, when introduced into locations where rats previously did not exist they can cause a huge amount of environmental degradation. 

The black rat is considered to be one of the world's worst invasive species. Also known as the ship rat, it has been carried world-wide as a stowaway on human sea-going vessels for millennia and has usually accompanied men to any new area visited or settled by human beings by sea. The similar but more aggressive brown rat or wharf rat, has also been carried worldwide by ships in recent centuries. Following the black plague and virtual extermination of the black rat in Europe, the brown rat moved in, changed the locks and has been the dominant rattus since.


So, am I justified in my reptilian brain reflex to get rid of rats? The next post explores how the word “rat” has become a regular part of the English language.

Garlic scapes are up, time to harvest

Garlic scapes, the thick stem growing out of hard neck varieties, have been spotted in several community garden plots. I like to write about them to a) let you know they are up, b) remind you to remove them and why and c) what to do with them. In a word - delicious.

Garlic scapes are that curly "whip" that grows up the stem of hardneck garlic. Softneck garlic does not have this whip, and I recently learned that most commercial garlic found in the grocery store is softneck precisely because growers don't have to deal with the scape.

"Deal with?" you ask. If the scape is not removed, the plant will put lots of energy into developing a flower and seed pod, thus leaving less energy for the underground crown which is what we harvest in July. Removing the scape not only helps develop a larger crown of garlic, it's also tasty.

This year I planted more than 100 cloves, which means I have that many scapes to harvest.
Wait until the scapes curl. Harvesting them too early and they'll grow back.

What to do with them:
1) use them as you'd use garlic in any food preparation
2) chop up into stir frys
3) they make a spicy and crunchy addition to salads

Diversity and potential at the edges

In permaculture, we notice that edges are places in the world that offer huge diversity. Have you ever noticed how fence rows between fields, or tree lines between fields and woods, or the marshy areas between dryland and wetlands are teaming with a wide variety of plants and animals? This is because these in between parts benefit from qualities of both sides of that line, and therefore are able to support a huge variety of life. Walking down my driveway recently, I noticed an edge I had not considered before.

We have a cement driveway between our house and our neighbor's house. It collects a lot of solar gain and moderates the nearby temperatures. On either side of the driveway is a three-foot strip of dirt. When we moved in, our side of the driveway was a shabby garden bed with trumpet vine (still digging it out four years later) and an invasive little bulb that just won't quit. It gets a lot of mid-day sun and I turned half the 60-foot length into a perennial herb garden, and the rest of it is our kitchen garden with one cherry tomato plant, basil and other annual herbs.

The other side of the driveway is technically our neighbor's property. She doesn't use the driveway and it's on the north side of her house, so it was nothing more than a mass of daylilies that didn't bloom because it didn't get nearly enough sun. With her permission, I created a raised bed with low retaining walls, mimicking our side of the driveway. For several years I have successfully grown grow kale and other shade tolerant plants.

In between the wood wall and the driveway, on both sides, is a sliver of dirt, in some places no more than a quarter inch wide. Here is the edge where I noticed an amazing diversity of plant life. Following are photos of what I discovered in this "edge." All of the plants below are "volunteer," seeded from last year's stock - evidence that truly we can cultivate food anywhere - to think I had once considered "weed eating" this edge.

Borage. I can't believe I started some this year, I've got it everywhere, including the crack between the cement and the retaining wall. I'll leave it for the pollinators, and I love the little flowers.

Dill! I'll let this grow tall and then harvest the fronds or the seeds for pickles.

Cilantro. Going to seed. I'll harvest some and let one seed for next year.

Fennel. The bulb won't get big, but we'll eat the fronds and later, the seeds.
